THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN WARSAW
- Take a walk along the Lake of the Ozarks at Drake Harbor and see all of the wildflowers planted by the Missouri Master Naturalists beside the concrete walkway right next to the lake. A short and lovely walk.
- Visit the downtown antique and gift shops. Warsaw has several antique and gift shops along the main street. You can find all kinds of unique items there.
- Visit the new Statuary Gardens, 451 E. Jefferson, just a few blocks from downtown Warsaw. There you will find a large selection of statuary as well as plants, baskets, iron products, and home décor.
- Are you a quilter? Then you will be happy to know that we have fabrics available at the Wagon Wheel in downtown Warsaw, at Saltbox Primitive Woolens, 3041 W. Dam Access Road or at Nana’s Fabrics on Highway 7.
- Are you a rug hooker? Then you will love visiting the Saltbox, 3041 W. Dam Access Road, where Patty has a huge variety of wools and patterns. (And your quilting friends will like the fabrics & patterns Debbie has available for you.)
- Visit the Truman Dam Observatory which overlooks the dam with Truman Lake on one side and Lake of the Ozarks on the other side. There you will also see our Blue Star Memorial and a short walk in the woods will take you to the Hooper House where the gardens are maintained by the Stepping Stones Garden Club. The butterfly garden behind the Hooper House has been replanted by our members and won the 2010 Federated Garden Clubs of Missouri P-7 Raytown Horticulture Award this year. The Hooper House, located in St. Clair County, was determined to be eligible for the National Historic Register of Historic Places based on its unique roof construction. John Hooper constructed the home circa 1903 where himself, his wife Molly and nine children lived.
The Corps of Engineers reconstructed the home in 1984 near the Harry S. Truman Visitor
Center and visitors may take a self-guided tour of the home. Also, a summer kitchen, smoke
house, sorghum press, and barn may be visited at the Hooper House homestead.
- Not far from the Truman Dam Observatory is the Lost Valley Fish Hatchery, 28232 Hatchery Ave., where a large aquarium shows all of the fish in Missouri lakes, plus all the tanks where the various fish are hatched. They also have a great gift shop with all of the items available, both free and for sale, from the Missouri Department of Conservation. A great place to pick up free literature about the birds, butterflies, fish, turtles, snakes, mammals, flora and fauna to take back to you garden club.
- Have lunch at the The Pig’s Tale & Humming Bird Tea Room, 301 Seminary in downtown or the unusual Common Ground Café’ on the Osage, 145 E. Main, restaurant. They also stock all kinds of spices, mixes and candies. Warsaw is also known for some great barbecue at the Chuck Wagon BBQ, 13683 Old Hwy 7, or Smoke Shack Bar-B-Que, 1601 E. Main St., restaurants.
- Speaking of candy, a visit to downtown Warsaw wouldn’t be complete without stopping at the Touch of Glass Workshop & Fudgery, 318 W. Main, (where they also do stained glass) and getting some of their delicious, homemade fudge.
This is the only town which is right on the Lake of the Ozarks and is a fun and interesting place to visit any time, but especially when you can also go to a flower show!
Have we convinced you to make a day of it? And if you want to enter our flower show, please call Joan Bowen (660-438-3653) or send her an e-mail (jne58@iland.net) for the program. Entries must be in by 7:45 AM that day. Then you have time to go and do all of the things listed above.
We’d love to see our friends from other clubs come visit us.
